Chlorine Free Diapers - Better for the Environment

A lot of parents are showing an interest in using chlorine free diapers and asking questions about why these dipaers are a better choice than regular disposable diapers.

As everyone knows disposable diapers are a huge environmental nightmare. A vast amount of landfill is taken up each year by them. Harmful chemicals contained within the diapers are released as the diapers begin to break down. These chemicals find their way into the soil and rivers causing needless damage to the environment.

We are encouraged to use cloth or terry diapers as a greener alternative. The problem is that this option involves quite a bit of work and inconvenience at a time when people have a lot on their plate already. As a result most parents don't persevere with cloth diapers, despite starting off with the very best of intentions.

One of the advantages of chlorine free diapers is that although they are disposed of in the same way as a regular diaper they don't cause the same degree of environmental damage.

Cloth Diapers

When I was expecting my first baby I heard from all quarters a bout how bad disposable diapers are and how we should all be going back to using terry and cloth. At ante-natal classes we were given demonstrations on how to use cloth diapers and given a doll to practice on.

I wanted to take a responsible approach and so I decided that I would use disposable diapers for the first few weeks until I got myself used to my new baby and into something resembling a routine. After that  I would go over to cloth.

So after a few weeks when things settled down a little I started with the cloth version. It was a bit of a shock to the system. Now I know that in my mothers day there were no disposable diapers and everyone used cloth and they all managed perfectly well. The trouble is though that now we have been spoiled by the enormous convenience of disposables that it is very hard to go back.

I didn't really mind the washing - I had a bucket to soak them in and an automatic washing machine ,so that part of it wasn't really a great problem. But I seemed to be having to change my daughter very frequently and the outer pants did not keep everything contained. When I was out and about with her it was all so much more awkward.

After about a week or so my daughter started to develop a rash on her bottom. I tried more frequent changing and leaving her without a diaper on her changing mat for a while each day. None of it worked and the rash got so bad that it was bleeding. That was the end for me and I put her back into disposables.

I had another three children and I regret to say that I did not even try cloth  diaperswith any of them. With three under four at one point I just couldn't face it.

I know that there are people who do use cloth diapers sucessfully and I admire them for it because it is so much better for our environment. Sadly I don't think that enough of us will make change back to make a real difference.

Chlorine Free Diapers

There is a more environmentally friendly version of the disposable available to parents now and that is the chlorine free diaper.

Of course they are still disposable and so create just as much waste as an ordinary diaper. They are certainly not the perfect solution in that respect.

However they do have certain advantages which make them a better choice.

Standard disposable diapers use chlorine as a bleaching agent. Chlorine is a very harsh chemical. In both the production and in the landfill disposal of standard diapers the chlorine can enter the environment creating harmful dioxins which are related to cancer in both animals and humans. Land and rivers can become polluted by it.

Chlorine may also be an irritant to your baby's delicate skin.

Chlorine free diapers are the same as standard ones in terms of funtionality and are every bit as convenient to use.

Whichever type you choose it is far more convenient to get them delivered plus if you place a regular order then you will never have to worry about running out.

If you want to save money and get free delivery then Amazon is pretty hard to beat. They will do a regular delivery for you every month, or every two, three or sixth months if you prefer. They offer a good discount for a regular order.
